We wake up at 5:00 am, anxious to get going.\u00a0 Jet lag seems to be gone.\u00a0 We\u2019re both feeling much better.\u00a0 ELECTRICITY STOPS<\/span>.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been trying to figure out when and where we could \u201ctop off\u201d our electricity card.\u00a0 Guess I\u2019ll find out today.\u00a0 No showers, no hair dryers, (and no coffee) and we both still look decent as we catch the bus to BISS.\u00a0 An accessible \u201cState Grid\u201d office is \u00bd block from the school.<\/p>\n

At the school, I get a translator, and head to the State Grid site.\u00a0 We take a number and when it\u2019s my turn, I step up with the card and money.\u00a0 Clerk looks confused and asks for a small document, showing me a sample.\u00a0 It\u2019s back at the apartment.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t know I needed it.\u00a0 None of the other teachers needed it.\u00a0 Two taxi rides and 1\u00bd hours later, I\u2019m back and paying.<\/p>\n

Back at BISS, I check on the medical report paperwork, which we completed Tuesday.\u00a0 My school needs it for my \u201cForeign Expert Certificate.\u00a0 Looks like DHL Express will deliver it Monday.\u00a0 BHSFIC is needing to get paperwork started and are pressing me for it.\u00a0 BISS doesn\u2019t seem comfortable turning loose of the form.\u00a0 This should be interesting.<\/p>\n

Alright! \u00a0I get lucky and today is pizza lunch for new teachers and families.\u00a0 It\u2019s really good.\u00a0 This won\u2019t be the last time I eat Tube Station Pizza.\u00a0 Back to the apartment. \u00a0I figure out how to insert the card into the meter in the hallway.\u00a0 Electricity solved.\u00a0\u00a0 I put together a dryer vent (no vent hose came with the dryer, of course) using a \u201cBoomwhacker\u201d and cardboard taped together, and start the laundry.\u00a0 Instructions on the washer and dryer are in Chinese, so it\u2019s a guess how to get it to work, but I get lucky and laundry is happening.\u00a0 Everything begins to feel better.\u00a0 We have electricity, phones, and fresh laundry.<\/p>\n

Creative vent – Boomwhacker<\/p><\/div>\n

Judy spent the afternoon touring medical offices with the other new staff and families.\u00a0 The insurance is no-deductible, and no co-pay, 100% coverage.\u00a0 Both sites are modern and very close.\u00a0 The morning was spent in meetings trying to figure out everything about collaboration, technology, and what exactly does the school want from the music teacher.\u00a0 She\u2019s getting several different answers right now.<\/p>\n

We decide it\u2019s a good time to get dinner somewhere besides our fridge. \u00a0We taxi to Sanlitun Village.\u00a0 We visit Sundan to chase down a dryer vent hose, but apparently Panasonic doesn\u2019t even make one for it.\u00a0 After many gestures they show me a vent hose for an oven\/stovetop.\u00a0 I can make this work.<\/p>\n

We head upstairs for an enjoyable dinner at THE BLUE FROG.\u00a0 Judy has a cobb salad, and I get a grilled chicken sandwich.\u00a0 The food is great.\u00a0 We sit out on a balcony enjoying a cool evening.\u00a0 Life in Beijing sure seems restful tonight.<\/p>\n

The taxi ride brought us back to reality.\u00a0 The driver cut people off, whipped through red lights, and squeezed in a few holes at speed, where I didn\u2019t think a car could fit.\u00a0 Judy tried to video it when she realized what kind of a driver we had.\u00a0 Breathless when we arrive at UHN.\u00a0 It\u2019ll take awhile for the adrenaline rush to go away so we can sleep.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
