BISS FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!\u00a0 After all the discussion, decisions, moves, and Beijing adventures, Judy is finally starting her first day of classes.\u00a0 She heads out and immediately has some \u201cfun\u201d.\u00a0 The first three taxi drivers look at her instructions, and shake her off.\u00a0 The next one doesn\u2019t even give her a chance to get in.\u00a0 He just drives right by.\u00a0 Finally, the 5th<\/sup> taxi allows her in and she\u2019s off to work.<\/p>\n

She has a fun day, meeting students, and settling into the routine of a class day.\u00a0 She forgot to take her water bottle.\u00a0 There are water dispensers in the halls of the school, but no cups.\u00a0 She gets really parched, and by lunch is exhausted.\u00a0 After lunch, some water, and some rest, she finishes up the afternoon of classes.\u00a0 Her observation of the day\u2026\u2026\u2026she\u2019s too old to teach Pre-K and Kindergarten.\u00a0 Their 45 minute classes are a long time to entertain and direct all that energy.\u00a0 Fortunately, it\u2019s only two days a week.<\/p>\n

I get my first contact with teachers at BHSFIC.\u00a0 The first email is an invite to a get-together at Sanlitun Village for the new teachers.\u00a0 The 2nd<\/sup> email is from Serene Hu, acting principal at the school.\u00a0 It contains a detailed schedule for Thursday, our first official meeting.\u00a0 After two weeks of dealing with setting up the household, I\u2019m ready to begin thinking about my job, however part-time it might be.<\/p>\n

I walk over to Metro for some groceries (about a mile).\u00a0 Again, I overdo the purchases and have more than I can carry.\u00a0 Sooner or later, I hope to learn how to avoid the overload.\u00a0 I get it out to a taxi, and then unload at UHN.\u00a0 A gate guards helps me get it to the gate.\u00a0 I leave half at the gate, and carry the rest to the apartment.\u00a0 Another trip to the gate, and I\u2019m caught up my major shopping for the week.<\/p>\n

Judy gets home and we talk over the first day of class.\u00a0 Around 6:40, I grab a taxi and head for Sanlitun.\u00a0 I find the meeting site, and soon a few of the teachers arrive.\u00a0 We find a restaurant, order dinner, and get down to the serious business of finding out about each other.\u00a0 The new Girls PE teacher is from El Paso.\u00a0 She\u2019s been the soccer coach at Santa Teresa, NM for 22 years (I think).\u00a0 She\u2019s has two sons, both living in Albuquerque.\u00a0 She doesn\u2019t sound like she\u2019s from El Paso.\u00a0 Sure enough, she grew up in London, and taught in England a few years before moving to El Paso.<\/p>\n

The 2nd<\/sup> teacher has been teaching in New York for 11 years.\u00a0 Her accent doesn\u2019t sound \u201cNew York\u201d.\u00a0 As it turns out, her family is from Barbados.\u00a0 It\u2019s English, but with a UK twist.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve been having a lot more \u201cfun\u201d than we did.\u00a0 When they arrived,in Beijing, they were put in transition dorm rooms on the BHSF main campus until they found an apartment.\u00a0 After one week, they still haven\u2019t found an apartment.\u00a0 BISS has the right idea.\u00a0 They put you in an apartment for a year.\u00a0 After a year, if you want to move, you\u2019re welcome to.\u00a0 The BHSFIC teachers still have many Beijing adventures in front of them.\u00a0 It should be fun comparing stories.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
