Sept. 9 &#8211; 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been a pretty boring week! \u00a0As I \u201creflect\u201d on the week, Beijing life is becoming routine.\u00a0 Judy\u2019s classes are steady.\u00a0 She has the usual frustrations associated with teaching the IB curriculum for middle school. \u00a0She\u2019s developing all new lesson plans that have to meet a very strict criteria.\u00a0 Frotunately, the upper graders behave well and work hard. \u00a0The lower graders are a different story.\u00a0 Combine their language difficulties with strong wills and bedlam exists.\u00a0 She\u2019ll solve it, but it\u2019s not solved yet.<\/p>\n<p>My classes are fun!\u00a0 They began to get more relaxed this week.\u00a0 Some of the students are language challenged, and I\u2019m not getting through to them as clearly as I wish I could.\u00a0 I decided to start each class day with some rhythm counting.\u00a0 It gets them focused quickly, especially when we began counting individually down the line.\u00a0 Some mistakes led to lighter moments, and we were able to have fun with it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_435\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/BHSFIC.Music-Class.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-435\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-435\" alt=\"Working on some rhythms\" src=\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/BHSFIC.Music-Class-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/BHSFIC.Music-Class-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/BHSFIC.Music-Class-1024x764.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/BHSFIC.Music-Class-624x466.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Working on some rhythms<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I began to meet with a few of the students about the \u201cclubs\u201d I\u2019m sponsoring.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been asked to help with an instrumental music club, and also a guitar club.\u00a0 The students are responsible for determining their goals for the club for the year.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to determine when the clubs will meet.\u00a0 We have a \u201cClub Fair\u201d Monday afternoon where students promote the club to other students.\u00a0 The 10<sup>th<\/sup> graders are our \u201ctargets\u201d, since they haven\u2019t been at the school before.<\/p>\n<p>Now that Judy and I both have our official \u201cZ\u201d Visa (work permit), good for multiple entries for a year, we had to register at the police station, again.\u00a0 Each time we leave China and return, we have to visit the police station and update our residency.\u00a0 The law states that it must be done within 24 hours, but there is some leniency.\u00a0 Since we\u2019re visiting Korea next weekend, we\u2019ll have to visit the police station again on our return.\u00a0 We have to have our passports, a copy of our apartment lease, a copy of our landlord\u2019s ID, and a tax statement from BISS showing they paid the rent and tax on the apartment with all the official stamps.\u00a0 It gets complicated finding a time when the police station is open, Judy &amp; I are both available, and our agent Lisa is available to accompany us to translate if an issue occurs.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, the BISS Head of School was telling us about their TIC (this is China) moment.\u00a0 Their hot water stopped, and he assumed there was a problem with the meter, or payment, or something.\u00a0 When he was able to ask the apartment management about the problem, he was told there was work being done on the \u201chot water\u201d that affected all the apartments in their complex.\u00a0 When he asked when it would be working again, he was told \u201cit may be only a month, but it could be longer\u201d?\u00a0 How fun!!!!<\/p>\n<p>Judy had a little added excitement on her trip home Friday evening.\u00a0 When she handed the taxi driver a 100y bill for a 28y fare, he became very agitated.\u00a0 He insisted she go to one of the stores just outside our complex and get change.\u00a0 She finally found one of the stores that would do it, and she returned to the taxi and paid her fare.\u00a0 We thought he just didn\u2019t want to \u201cchange\u201d the 100y bill, or didn\u2019t have change himself.\u00a0 Read tomorrow\u2019s blog entry for an update on what was probably happening (oh boy, a cliff-hanger)!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been a pretty boring week!
