{"id":485,"date":"2013-09-23T13:45:48","date_gmt":"2013-09-23T06:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/?p=485"},"modified":"2013-09-23T13:45:48","modified_gmt":"2013-09-23T06:45:48","slug":"dmz-92013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/?p=485","title":{"rendered":"DMZ, 9\/20\/13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Day 2 in Seoul starts off the same as day 1, with pastries and caffeine.\u00a0 We\u2019re picked up a few minutes later along with German couple, also staying out our hotel.\u00a0 We drive in the van to a spot where we meet a large coach bus.\u00a0 The bus fills and we start the drive north to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). \u00a0It&#8217;s the heavily guarded area between North and South Korea. \u00a0It&#8217;s approximately 55 kilometers from Seoul.\u00a0 Most of the route is along a river lined with high barbed wire fences and elevated guard buildings.\u00a0 The guide later tells us they\u2019re guarding against North Korean infiltration.<\/p>\n<p>One hour later, we arrive at a tourist stop for a 20-minute break (snacks, etc.) and then travel to \u201cThe 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Tunnel\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s a tunnel the South Koreans say was built by North Korea to infiltrate the South.\u00a0 North Korea disagrees, and says they were mining coal.\u00a0 South Korea has found 3 other similar tunnels since 1953.\u00a0 Anyway, entry is down a long (really long) ramp.\u00a0 Of course, what goes down, must come up, so we\u2019re not looking forward to the walk out.<\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019re going in we\u2019re given \u201chard hats\u201d.\u00a0 At the bottom of the ramp is a long tunnel.\u00a0 The tunnel is just low enough so that Judy goes through untouched.\u00a0 I, on the other hand, spend most of my time slightly bent over, bumping my head every 5 \u2013 10 feet.\u00a0 I get a really good scratch on my forehead when one of the \u201cbumps\u201d knocks my hard hat.\u00a0\u00a0 At the end of the tunnel, a steel door has been placed, blocking access.\u00a0 It\u2019s supposed to be about 150 meters from the actual border with North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnel is narrow and damp.\u00a0 Apparently the North Koreans weren\u2019t anticipating the tourist crowds when they built it.\u00a0 The climb out was what we expected, long and tiring.\u00a0 We\u2019re both winded when we get to the top.\u00a0 Most of the visitors are suffering the same symptoms as they reach the top.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-481\" alt=\"DMZ 1\" src=\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-1-224x300.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-1-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-1-764x1024.jpg 764w, http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-1-624x835.jpg 624w, http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-1.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-482\" alt=\"DMZ 2\" src=\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-2-224x300.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-2-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-2-764x1024.jpg 764w, http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-2-624x835.jpg 624w, http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DMZ-2.jpg 1936w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next stop is the Dora Observatory, a mountaintop area with \u201cpay telescopes\u201d, for visitors to look out across the DMZ into North Korea.\u00a0 It\u2019s a little foggy today so the view is limited.\u00a0 We are able to see the Kaesong Industrial Complex, a joint venture in the DMZ between the North and South.\u00a0 It\u2019s been in the news lately because it just reopened Monday (9\/16) after N.
