BHSFIC is sponsoring a program on Ancient Chinese Instruments and Music this afternoon.\u00a0 One of my students volunteers at \u201cThe Temple of Heaven\u201d, a nearby historical site.\u00a0 Part of the temple site is the Divine Music Administration (the Ancient Chinese Imperial Musical Museum).\u00a0 They do research on ancient Chinese instruments, and analysis on the scrolls where music was written that was played when the temple was built in the 1400\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n Since I\u2019m making an extra trip over to the campus today, I\u2019m going to go early and visit \u201cTea Street.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s near BHSFIC, so it seems like a logical time to visit.\u00a0 It\u2019s supposedly 1 \u00bd kilometers full of over 1000 tea shops. \u00a0I\u2019m looking for Chinese stuff to bring home for Xmas, so it seemed like a good place to visit.\u00a0 I find it on the map, find the nearest train station, and head out.\u00a0 When I get off the train, I start walking and eventually arrive in the area.\u00a0 Like most of Beijing, there\u2019s no clue what\u2019s near you, and right around the next corner, I was in the middle of it.<\/span><\/p>\n They weren\u2019t kidding.\u00a0 The area was one tea shop after another.\u00a0 I found some things that may work, took pictures, purchased a sample or two, and headed over to school for the program.<\/span><\/p>\n The music program was great.\u00a0 The performers had a huge professional sound set-up, television cameras everywhere, and were wearing traditional costumes.\u00a0 They demonstrated each of the instruments, and then performed several ensemble numbers.\u00a0 We also saw some of the scrolls they were analyzing. \u00a0\u00a0Before and after the show, students (and teachers) were allowed to try out the instruments.\u00a0 As usual, respect for a performer goes up, when you experience the techniques involved first-hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Students getting help playing the instruments.<\/p><\/div>\n Pan-pipe demonstration<\/p><\/div>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Judy makes another Clue \u201ckill\u201d today.\u00a0 She thinks the game is down to her and one other player.\u00a0 The name she got was the name of the person who tried to \u201chit\u201d her early in the game in the nurse\u2019s … Continue reading ![\"Ancient3\"](\"http:\/\/gordonandjudy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Ancient3.jpg\")
